I have said the rays needed to ad some power so I can’t be too upset with the Pena move
But I think the Rays very high strike out numbers has been the main reason for their offensive inconsistencies the last few years. While I know a KO is just an out, when you combine all the high numbers through out the middle of this order now, it is going to continue to be a problem. Yes, a bunch of HR’s might make up for the KO’s but over the long haul, I can see this team going through stretches of having difficulty scoring.
With the loss of Damon(14%KO rate), my main man Casey-K(10%) and Shoppach((31%) and replaced by Scott(23%), Pena(27%) and Molina(23%) the Rays have increased their KO rate by 18%(55% to 73) with those three players. Against lefties, it is even worse. Damon(12%), my main man Casey-K(14%) and Shoppach(26%) are replaced by Scott(30%), Pena(31%) and Molina(26%). That’s a jump of 35%(from 52% to 87%).
At this point it seems paramount to add a RH bat who can spell Pena at first for 30 games at 1st base and against tough lefties as well as repalace Scott who may struggle as the DH in similar fashion. He could also be an important bat off the bench as a PH’er or match-up guy late in games.
I still think the Rays could add that bat through a trade. I could see Kyle Blanks being available but I would be going against my call for less KO’s. Maybe Davis to the Padres for Jesus Guzman and Austin Hodges(catcher). Or Neimann to the A’s for Chris Carter and Max Stassi(catcher). How nice would it have been to pick up Nick Evans when he was available and may be he could still be with a deal with the Pirates.

My expectations for the team was to win the Big East and qualify for a BCS game where they’d be promptly decimated by whoever they played against. With the level of talent on this team, that wasn’t unreasonable.
These guys just rolled over and died, and I blame the entire coaching staff based on a variety of pathetic gameplan decisions and individual game moments where some absolutely idiotic calls were made. I *do* think they can find someone better to coach this team; it’s not like the Holtz name has done a lot for recruiting for the team; the team doesn’t have the budget to recruit heavily out of state and they’re still not pulling in the top Florida recruits away from the likes of Florida, FSU or Miami. That being said, I don’t think anything will be done about the coaching staff because if there’s one group I have less faith in for USF Football than the coaching staff, it’s the Athletic Director’s office.

I like how God's Chosen One singlehandedly won all those games and didn’t get help from a very good defense and a conservative gameplan that leverages said defense. I wouldn’t class Rivers, Hasselbeck, Dalton and Sanchez in one grouping. Rivers is clearly better than the rest of those, Dalton and Hasselbeck might be about equal, and Sanchez is worse. Rivers and Schuab are about equal (aware he’s injured). Tearbow is worse than all of those guys. I’d say he’s roughly as good as Matt Cassel, which puts him in the bottom 3rd of the AFC but not the worst.

I might wait until they do some more patching, had some serious FPS issues in what could have been the most epic fight of the game so far. Such an enigma. As always, if cost is low then yeah, you take a shot, but I’m not sure that they’d just give him away even if Fielder becomes the next Richie Sexson. Here’s some really interesting graphs from last year. As you may recall he got off to a pretty nice start carrying a high average and getting on base quite a bit before hitting a wall:
So far this looks like a player that was having a lot of success hitting the ball on the ground and on a line, but for whatever reason turned into a flyball hitter midway through the season. His BABIP fell off the table as a result with his wOBA following a similar pattern. What about Iso:
To see a guy all of a sudden stop getting on top of the ball and hitting with virtually no power makes you wonder if he was fatigued from his first full season in MLB or even more likely whether he suffered an injury to his wrist/hand that would so drastically alter his trajectories and annihilate his power so successfully. His pedigree, alone, makes him interesting. When you add in his very strong plate discipline, solid contact rates, and modest power that could blossom from a switch-hitting, defensively-competent 1B with a lot of years of control left it’s almost a no-brainer to at least inquire.

I had him on fantasy so I paid more attention to him then normal. I’m convinced he was injured. He had a thumb injury that was reported in July but I’m certain happened well before that. He tried to play through which is why he fell off the planet in July. He was DTD several times with ankle and “wrist” injuries. When he went on the DL, it was for a broken nose which also gave him time to heal his thumb and when he finally came back his stroke had returned. As long as he can stay healthy, I’d think he could stay *around* a .350 wOBA. I think he’s worth Niemann + some decent position prospect.

Yeah I also had him but forgot about the broken nose. Really tough season for him, but you’re right that when he was good to go he was a very capable player in a bad hitters park. I would gladly give up Niemann and Cruz/Barnese/Fleming basically any of our guys that we’re not going to be able to protect that they may be able to that can contribute to their team as early as later this year.

Once the league officially re-opens for business, Howard’s future in Orlando is sure to be one of the season’s dominant story lines, along with Chris Paul’s future in New Orleans and the Nets’ attempts to secure a long-term commitment from star guard Deron Williams.
It’s been an open secret around the league that the Nets’ dream scenario is pairing Howard with Williams, after they followed up their failed pursuit of Carmelo Anthony last season by trading for Williams just before the February trade deadline. It remains to be seen whether Howard will regard the Nets as a prime destination on par with the New York Knicks, even after they move out of New Jersey, but sources say that Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov has long believed that teaming them up would convince both Team USA stars to commit their long-term future to the Brooklyn-bound Nets.
Most rival teams, however, doubt that the Magic can be convinced to start seriously considering trade scenarios for Howard this early. Orlando has thus far resisted outside interest in hopes of convincing the NBA’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year to stay in Central Florida. Two team executives monitoring the situation told ESPN.com on Tuesday night that they expect Orlando to take a patient approach with what could be Howard’s last year in town.
The Los Angeles Lakers are also expected to eventually lodge their own trade bid for Howard — featuring some combination of Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom — but the Nets appear poised to furnish Orlando with a young replacement for Howard in Lopez, two higher draft picks than the Lakers could presumably offer and the ability to shed Turkoglu’s expensive deal, which will enable Orlando to take another big rebuilding step.
It should be noted, though, that making such an offer — even if Orlando ultimately proves amenable — comes with its own risks for the Nets. The new tentative labor agreement struck last weekend by NBA owners and players has established new restrictions on extend-and-trade deals that would prevent Howard from receiving more than a one-year extension to his current contract as part of any trade. That’s a sharp contrast from the four-year extension worth nearly $86 million that Anthony received as part of his trade from Denver to New York in February.
In the event of a trade to any team, Howard would have the choice of a deal that includes a contract extension that could put him back on the free-agent market in the summer of 2014 or a trade without an extension that would preserve his right to opt out of the 2012-13 season on his current deal and become a free agent on July 1, 2012.
The Nets, then, would be putting themselves in danger of surrendering three more prime assets for Howard, after everything they gave up to get Williams, with both stars capable of opting out after the 2011-12 season and becoming unrestricted free agents.
Despite the Nets’ obvious interest, the Lakers and Knicks continue to be widely presumed to be Howard’s preferred destinations. The Los Angeles Clippers are also regarded as a legit contender Howard, despite the franchise’s history under owner Donald Sterling, because they’ll have cap space and could pair him with rising star Blake Griffin.
In a recent interview with Esquire magazine, Howard said: “There’s more you can do in a bigger place. I’m stuck in a tough position because I feel like right now, where I’m at, I’ve done so much. And I just don’t know what else I can do.”
Sources say that the Nets, furthermore, will go ahead with their plans to be very active in free agency starting Wednesday at 9 a.m., when teams and agents are allowed to start discussions about player signings. Howard remains Prokhorov’s No. 1 target, but New Jersey is expected to lodge bids for two of the top big men available in free agency — Denver’s Nene and Dallas’ Tyson Chandler — knowing that Howard will be hard to acquire even with its solid trade assets and that Williams is unlikely to stay with the Nets unless the roster is upgraded at center and small forward.

I hate to give the guy credit, but Bill Simmons is pretty spot on with his idea that it’s never a good idea to give up the best guy in the trade for a bunch of spare parts. Those first round picks would be virtually worthless if they’re not lottery picks which is pretty likely with Williams and Howard leading a team plus whoever else they get.

I *do* wish they would have kept the local groups in. Nothing against NY architectural firms, and some of that money will end up being flushed back down here, but with the economy the way it is, it hurts that a local government felt the need to look elsewhere instead of keeping it all local.
That being said, the one with the bank and the one that looks like a hot-wheels track are functionally good. The second proposal is beyond terrible since it attempts to rebuild the pier for what it is now instead of what it was or can be.
